It day two of getting Brynn all setup at Washington State University. I am very impressed with how the University practices safe computing.
In order to get Brynn’s computer onto the university network, the Resident Assistant came in with a disk which had all the latest patches for Windows XP and complimentary anti-virus software. She had a screenshot of the add/remove programs user interface too to make sure that all the required patches were installed to do a quick compare. Brynn of course already was running service pack 2, had her firewall on an was running Norton Antivirus so she was good to go. It was after this review that the Resident Assistant turned on her network port in her dorm room. Wireless seems to require a VPN client so we’ll save that for another day.
Upon first connection Brynn had to register her MAC Physical Address for the network card and supply addiition information about her machine. After that she was all set. This was all done with a slick little sign-on application all written in ASP.NET
I am back at the hotel with our youngest daughter now watching her swim. Mom is hanging out at the dorm room with Brynn.
This is a bitter sweet week, full of emotions. You see we’re excited for Brynn to start something new , something that we’ve talked about forever and it means a change in our role as parents. It is time to have confidence in the things we’ve taught her as her parents.
We all feel a bit edgy, lots of tears and also laughter (Weird mix) seam to be the order of the day.
