  • Yes, Nicole I am planning to do a Podcast. Right now, I’m building out the site for the show, trying to understand the best way to set it all up and learning how to produce such a beast.

I’m creating the show with Adobe Audition on Windows XP. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Audition comes with a number of royalty free sound clips and is also easy to use. I want to create a professional quality program that incorporates sound bytes from other shows and with Audition I was able to get it to work. The royalty free music will be for segment intros and bumper music.

To publish the Podcast I am going to use DasBlog. Unfortunately it doesn’t support enclosures yes, so until it does I will creating the RSS feeds manually. I’m going to publish my show in both MP3 and WMA and will have an RSS feed for each. You’ll choose the MP3 RSS feed if you want the show in that format or if you want the WMA version grab the WMA RSS feed.

The last piece to pull together is the rendering if my production notes. I want them in OPML and also inline in the posts when I announce a new show. To get this working I’ll either use some of Simon Fell’s code or Joshua Allen’s XSLT.

Tonight’s goal was pretty basic, get the subdomain working with DasBlog and narrow in on a technology plan. The subdomains works (needs a new banner and some minor tweaking and the text above is my plan).

So what’s the show about you ask? The title pretty much tells its all.

Geeks, A segment about folks behind technology, gizmos and more. This might just be us talking about a cool weblog post that caught our eye or it may be a recording of a Skype conversation that I have with a cool Geek.

Freaks – We get a kick out of reading the Weekly World News and also the Art Bell Program. In this segment we’ll talk about the goofiest articles in Weekly World News and replay some of the freakiest calls that the Art Bell Program Gets.

Tweaks, Try this at home things that you too can do on your PC, Smartphone, Pocket PC or other gadget.

That’s all for now, back to working on the plumbing.

Hopefully we’ll have the first show out before the new year and then roll a new one out each week.

    Cheers!

  • Major Nelson has also unplugged his Tivo. I unplugged mine last week and couldn’t be happier with the product, Scoble did the same last week on my advice. Harry Pierson gets his installed today.

Major Nelson gives some of the reasons why I am so happy to have my Tivo gone…

Your IR blasters often mis-fired and caused you to recorded “Oprah” when I wanted to record a James Bond movie.

You said you were recording “Goldfinger” but instead I got an hour of screaming and squealing housewives.

Your monthly cost has increased twice since we started together, that I can take…but here is the final straw: I find out you are going to start showing me ads when I fast forward? Sorry my friend, that’s not what I signed up for.

I am also very happy with the new Comcast PVR that’s running Microsoft software. I loved my Tivos but its time for a change. Incidentally, I have two 60 hour Series II standalone Tivos for sale, send me an email if you are interested. My contact information is in the lower right of this weblog.|

  • I’ve turned off my Tivo, I no longer need it.

Its been a great product that I’ve evangelized to friends, family and co-workers. I no longer need it though as I’ve replaced it with a new PVR that Comcast just brought onto the market.

It is a great unit and my the wife acceptance factor was high. (she’s using it now and totally gets how to use it).

You can watch a video here of the user experience or geek out on the AVSForum for more detailed information.

What I love most is that it has dual tuners. I can record one program while I watch another or even record two programs at the same time. This is something I’ve always wanted to do with my Tivo but it was only available if I got a DirectTivo and a Satellite dish. I don’t want a dish out the front of my home.

I love the fact that it supports recording of HDTV, this is somethign that Tivo hasn’t announced plans on yet for cable. I believe they’ve got an HDTV box for Direct TV, but I think its in the $1000 range. Added bonus no more delay delay while changing channels. The Tivo had a minor interruption while changing channels as it had to send a blast of infrared to the cable box. Now with an integrated unit in the cable box I don’t have to deal with that.

I know I can’t hack the unit, or show pictures or play music with it, but this is a nice unit and I can put my Tivos on eBay. For my power user scenarios I’ve got a Windows Media Center PC running upstairs in our bedroom.

Congratulations Comcast and the folks on the Media Foundation Team on a great product.

Thanks Tivo for teaching me about how a PVR will change your life and give me control over my TV. I look forward to a future of possibilities with Media Center and Media Foundation!

  • In Canada we call today Rememberance Day and wear poppies over our heartsto remembers those lost in wars of the past. In school we would recite the poem On Flanders Fields. Today in the United States it is Veteran’s Day. I found a short video from a CBS affiliate that is relevant to today’s war in Iraq. Please take a moment to think of those who’ve died to protect our freedom
