  • I grew up in a small town in southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada called Estevan. As many hometowns do, it profoundly impacted me. It’s a place built on sensibility, resilience, and hard work–all of which brought me to the States when I started my career in tech at Microsoft, Twitter, and today at Automattic.

I had the honor of returning home recently to keynote the inaugural ICED Rural Conference, put on by the team at the Southeast Techhub in Estevan. Attendees from across North America visited Estevan to learn how they are making a dent in the tech world. Such an emotional week and great to get back out on the speaking circuit.

Thank you for allowing me to share my story, it was a joy to talk about how future leaders will come from (and how they can stay) in our rural communities.

    Yes you can, Estevan!

  • Josie is on her way to the NFL and has signed with the Seattle Seahawks. 🎉I could not be more proud!

It has been quite a month for her. She graduated from Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism just weeks ago.

It has been an amazing journey to watch. Josie grew up with a video camera in her hand, mastering the art of story telling through media from a very young age. You should see how fast she is with all the pro tools and man she can put together a story.

At WSU she joined the Cougars Football team working on their media team. Broadcast, social and in game. She loves working in sports! She worked all the home games building content for Instagram and social. A number of her videos were shown in game on the big screen as well. Some of those lenses she carries are almost as tall as her. So incredibly proud to be able to write this.

Now this week, Josie landed her first job as an intern with the Seattle Seahawks, she’ll start with them this July.

Some photos of Josie of recent graduation and also of her amazing work. Yay Josie! 🎉

  • Yesterday, I asked ChatGPT, “What is a tasty recipe for beef stew for a rainy Sunday afternoon?” The response was perfect and did not require scrolling through a memoir to view the recipe. Better yet, it tasted great and I have left overs for the week.

    Beef Stew

    Ingredients:

    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 2 pounds beef chuck roast, trimmed and cut into 1-inch cubes
    • Salt and pepper
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 large onions, diced
    • 4 cloves garlic, minced
    • 2 cups beef broth
    • 2 cups red wine
    • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
    • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
    • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 4 large carrots, peeled and diced
    • 2 stalks celery, diced
    • 1 pound small red potatoes, quartered

    Instructions:

    1. Heat the oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Season the beef with salt and pepper and sprinkle with the flour. Add the beef to the pot and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.
    2. Add the onions and garlic to the pot and cook until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.
    3. Stir in the beef broth, red wine, tomato paste, thyme, rosemary, and bay leaf. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, until the beef is tender, about 1 1/2 hours.
    4. Add the carrots, celery, and potatoes to the pot and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes.
    5. Remove the bay leaf and season the stew with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.

  • This weekend, our great friend Melodye Pierson passed away unexpectedly. Melodye was a backup Mom, mentor and friend to me. I just don’t know where I’d be today without Mel. She always had a special way with kids. After our chats, I always felt special and ready to do something kick ass which was one of her key phrases.

Thank you for memories Melodye, we miss you already. Brad and Jeff we love you. 🙏😔
